What is the GED and how do I pass it?
The GED is a high school equivalency test made up of 4 subject tests; Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math. Students must pass all 4 tests with a minimum score of 145 out of 200 to receive their Maryland state issued high school diploma.
What is the Accuplacer and how do I pass it?
The Accuplacer is made up of tests that evaluate a student’s readiness for college-level courses. It does not determine college admission; only course placement. If a student scores too low, they may be required to take courses for no college credit until they are able to prove their proficiency. You do not “PASS” the Accuplacer. You simply try to improve your score so you are eligible to enroll in for-credit courses. LCMC supports students who seek to improve their Math and English Accuplacer scores.
What is the TEAS test and how do I pass it?
TEAS is the test collegiate nursing programs use to help determine admission. It is much like any other placement test where there is a Math and English component. It is not a test that you “PASS.” The goal is to test in the highest percentile possible. LCMC supports students who seek to improve their Math and English TEAS scores.
What is Academic English at LCMC?
Students who enter our ESL program and go to the end of the program, graduate and are eligible for our Academic English class. This class utilizes our GED/College Prep English curriculum to support advanced ELL toward achieving their next academic goal.
How can I study for the GED, Accuplacer, TEAS, or Academic English with LCMC?
LCMC has 3 methods of instruction to support students on their path to achieving their academic goals..
Instructor-Led Classes - Our classes happen at various times throughout the school year and during the summer. Classes are held in the daytime, evening, and on weekends. Each class totals 60 hours of instruction and focuses on one subject at a time. We have classes instructed in Spanish and English. Attendance is mandatory.
Learning Labs - This is an opportunity for students to get support with a facilitator in a small group setting and sometimes one-on-one. Students can bring whatever material they are struggling with, or learn as the facilitator introduces general concepts. Facilitators work with students in all subjects. Students may drop-in as needed. ***During COVID, all Learning Labs are virtual. Students must sign up the day before so facilitators are prepared. Learning Labs are currently held Tuesdays (Math/Science only) & Thursdays (Language Arts/Social Studies only) 10-11:30am.***
One-on-One Tutoring - If a student is struggling or has a learning disability, we pair them with a tutor who can support them with specialized instruction.
How long does it take to pass the GED?
The student is in control of their own timeline. The more time and effort put into preparing for the test, the sooner a student will be prepared to take and pass the test.
How do I know when I am ready to test?
LCMC has a series of practice tests that will give you and your instructor insight into how close you are to being prepared to successfully pass the GED or increase your Accuplacer or TEAS test scores. The results of the practice tests will let students know if they should continue their studies or if they should schedule their test(s). The choice always belongs to the student. However, students should always strongly consider the advice of their instructor.
How much does it cost to study with LCMC?
All of our educational services are low to no cost. Our instructor-led classes have a $45 fee per class. Our Learning Labs are free. Our one-on-one tutoring is free but has limited admission.
Do I have to pay for testing?
For fees associated with the Accuplacer to enter Montgomery College, refer to THIS PAGE. For other community colleges, refer to their website for Accuplacer testing registration information. Consult with your college program regarding TEAS testing fees and scheduling locations. They will vary and are paid directly to the testing service. The GED testing fee varies per state and each test has its own fee. In addition, there is a separate fee for the GED Ready practice test, and the official GED test. As long as you are enrolled as an LCMC student and have a record of active participation, we pay all GED testing fees.
