Adult Ed Builds Bonds

LCMC offers many ways to support adult learners in Montgomery County through volunteering, including tutoring, assisting in a classroom, teaching life skills, and more.

Scroll through to find what interests you. You can be a Teaching Assistant, a conversation group leader for LC Chats, a GED Tutor, lead a one-off workshop, or even be a Board Member.

Fill out this form to get started, and our team will reach out to you with more information. Please contact volunteercoordinator@lcmcmd.org with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Train to be a Teacher Assistant

With nearly 2000 students served a year in approximately a dozen locations and online, our ESL and GED classroom program are taught by certified teachers, but often they need volunteers to assist in the classroom. Our teacher assistants typically volunteer in one class a week, lasting approximately 3 hours. The extra help in the classroom is part of what ensures quality education and attention for students to be able to keep up with the pace of the class and succeed.

If you are interested in becoming a Teacher Assistant, please fill out this form.

Tutor a GED Student

For those learners who have a firm handle on basic literacy (approximately a 5th grade reading level), but do not yet have their high school diploma or equivalent, we offer free tutoring to prepare for the GED exam. Our GED classes are available in different locations throughout Montgomery County, and offer a 1:1 student:tutor ratio.

Currently our GED program is taught in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Silver Spring, and always need more volunteers, especially those who can volunteer once a week in these areas.

If you are interested in helping an adult learner in basic math, social studies, and general test preparation, please fill out this form.

Lead an LC Chats Group

If you ever have tried to learn a new language, you know that speaking is often the hardest part. By committing two hours a week to LCMC as a LC Chats Facilitator, you are helping many of our neighbors in the county gain the confidence they need to better their lives. And because the program is all about getting people to speak and be comfortable in social settings, it is really a way to build community and have fun doing it.

If you are interested in volunteering as an LC Chat Facilitator, please fill out this form for more information.

Teach a Life Skills Workshop

LCMC partners with volunteers and organizations who can provide one-day workshops in life skill sets such as financial literacy, health literacy, and more. We’ve even partnered in teaching students who travel to vulnerable areas often how to prevent, identify symptoms, and get treatment for Zika virus!

Whether you’re interested in helping under-served adults with resume-building, understanding savings accounts and credit cards, how to read prescription and nutrition labels, or perhaps have identified a life skills need among low-income or immigrant communities in Montgomery County, we welcome your help.

If you’re interested in providing class space and/or teaching a life skills workshop, please contact Ryan at volunteercoordinator@lcmcmd.org.

Teach Computer Skills

Currently, we offer basic Computer Skills classes to adult learners of many backgrounds. Adults in these classes learn the very basics of computer usage and navigation, as often their backgrounds have not required computer skills in previous life or work environments.

We also offer Digital Literacy instruction to parents of children enrolled in Head Start through our partnership with a Pre-K program in Rockville. While their children are receiving Pre-K instruction, these learners receive both free ESL instruction as well as Digital Literacy instruction. Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills. Often, underserved adults lack the basic computer and digital literacy skills that have helped advance so many others to more easily navigate the workforce and everyday life.

We are always looking for more computer-savvy volunteers willing to teach either or both of these skill sets. For more information on how to volunteer your time for this programming, please fill out this form.
