Now Accepting Applications for the 2019 ESL Legacy Scholarship

Every year, the ESL Legacy Scholarship provide college scholarship support to children whose parents studied English as a Second Language through classes or tutoring offered by the Literacy Council of Montgomery County. In providing financial support, the scholarship seeks to enable financially disadvantaged youth to pursue higher education. The award symbolically honors their parents for demonstrating the importance of education and life-long learning to their children.

The scholarship provides one student up to $5,000 per year, for up to 4 years, in college tuition. Applicants for the 2019 ESL Legacy Scholarship must be attending college in Fall 2019. Therefore, at the time of application, the student must be a high school senior or currently enrolled college student who won’t yet graduate this spring. At least one parent of the applicant must have received either ESL tutoring for LCMC or taken ESL classes with LCMC, whether they are current LCMC students or former.

This opportunity is made possible by a generous LCMC donor, through the Community Foundation of Greater Washington and FutureLink.

To apply, students must submit the following to Geneva Brooks, at geneva@literacycouncilmcmd.org, by 5pm on Friday, March 22, 2019.

  • Completed application form

  • Personal statement essay sheet

  • Completed FAFSA or 1040 tax form

  • Transcript (high school, or if currently enrolled in college, a college transcript)
