“I came from China three years ago. At that time, I didn’t speak English well. I came to the Literacy Council in the Rockville Library. I got a tutor. One year later, I can shop in the grocery store and understand the labels.”

— Wei, ESL Tutoring Program

The ADULT BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAM works with adults who speak and understand English but are reading and writing below a fourth grade level.

The ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESL) 1:1 INSTRUCTION PROGRAM works with adults who speak English at a basic or beginner level. Tutors teach reading, writing, listening comprehension, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation skills. Student attendance & progress are monitored to ensure that they are advancing to their desired economic, educational & everyday living goals. An annual $25 fee covers the cost of instruction & materials.

SMALL ONLINE GROUPS (SOGs) are LCMC's Small Online Tutoring Groups for intermediate and higher level adult English learners. SOGs meet 2 hours per week for approximately 10 weeks. Only 5-10 students per SOG and 2-3 instructors ensures low student to teacher ratio! Registration and assessment are required. Cost: $25.00

1:1 ESL instruction is carried out by trained volunteers who meet with their students virtually for at least 2 hours each week. 1:1 ESL instruction is an effective way to serve learners who …

  • have limited schedule flexibility

  • may have difficulty keeping up in a group classroom setting

  • have not attended school before

  • who need privacy or confidentiality

  • who simply need to learn at their own pace
